支持率が低下する中で、増派を核としたイラク新政策への支持を求めています。

President Bush Delivers Annual State of the Union Address
(24 January 2007)

“Following the terrorist attacks of 2001, President Bush came to Congress for his 2002 State of the Union with an 84 percent approval rating. It is now 34 percent.”

とありますから、支持率から見る限り、ブッシュ政権は今かなり危機的な状況にあるといえるでしょう。

罰金の理由ですが、

“Not because the pills are unsafe, but because regulators decided the companies’ claims about their products’ results were false.”

なのだとか。

そんな気はしていましたが・・・。

1月2日、フォード元大統領（第38代）の葬儀が行われました。
式には、ブッシュ現大統領や、クリントン元大統領、カーター元大統領などが参列しています。

先の中間選挙では民主党が勝利し、アメリカのイラク政策がどう変化するかに注目が集まっています。
一方で、イラクの治安が悪化しているという現状もあります。
そんな中、イラクのアメリカ兵を増員するという案が、一つの選択肢として取り上げられています。

共和党上院議員Lindsay Graham氏などが上記の案の支持者で、

“Political reform without additional combat capability is not going to lead to a successful outcome in Iraq.”

と発言しています。

今年は原油高を背景に、ガソリン価格が高騰した年でもありました。
ガソリンの値上がりは、石油を輸入に頼っている国のもろさを、はからずも露呈した出来事でした。

FedExのpresident、Frederick Smith氏が

“Other than perhaps nuclear proliferation and weapons of mass destruction, there is no greater threat to the security of the United States and our economic security, than our continuing dependence on imported petroleum.”

と指摘していますが、まさにこの点がアメリカのひとつの弱点だという気がします。

政府というものは、情報が外部に漏れることを嫌うものです。
しかし、情報がオープンになっていなければ、国民は自らの政府に対して、正しい評価を下すことができません。
そういう意味で、報道機関の役割は、どの国でもたいへん重要だと言えるでしょう。

Washington Post紙の元編集主幹Ben Bradlee氏の、
“The relationship between the government and the press is adversarial, if not confrontational.”
という意見が紹介されていますが、85歳の超ベテランジャーナリストの見解だけに、重みが違いますね。

誕生して十数年、インターネットは私たちの生活様式をすっかり変えてしまいました。
電子メールや検索エンジンのない世界はもう考えられないという人も、多いのではないでしょうか？

今週の英語力！は、

を取り上げます。

“Email is for old people.”
“It’s so obsolete, almost.”
なんていう発言もあって、びっくりさせられました(obsoleteは「時代遅れの」という意味）。

インターネットの進化は、これからますます加速するようです。

まだ11月だというのに、街はクリスマス飾りで輝いています。
クリスマス商戦が始まりました。
アメリカではこの時期を、「holiday season」と呼びます。

を取り上げます。

という一節が、この時期のElectronics業界の状況を見事に表しています。

US Government Approves Use of Silicone Breast Implants

先日、FDA(The U.S. Food and Drug Administration) がシリコンを使った豊胸手術を解禁しました。

実はアメリカでは、1992年以降、ほとんどのシリコン・インプラントが禁止されていたのです。
その根拠になったのは、
“Ruptured implants and leaking silicone could lead to cancer, autoimmune disease and connective tissue disorders.”
というレポート。
もしこれが科学的に実証されたことだとしたら、ちょっと怖いですね。
